The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has drawn a clear distinction between how different health insurance products handle rapid medical advancements. In a written parliamentary reply, Deputy Prime Minister and MAS Chairman Gan Kim Yong explained that while MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) are regularly updated to include newer, less-invasive procedures, legacy Critical Illness (CI) policies operate under fixed definitions.

Updating these older CI contracts to include modern procedures without premium adjustments would threaten the actuarial sustainability of the products. According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the Life Insurance Association (LIA) is currently studying the feasibility of allowing policyholders to adjust existing coverage, though this remains a complex challenge. Consumers are being encouraged to take a more active role in assessing their insurance needs, as many may be unaware that their legacy policies might not trigger a payout for newer, more effective treatments that fall outside old definitions.
